Some Easy Ways to "Upgrade" Your Festival experience

Tips to Upgrade Your Festival Experience via the Festival Lawyer

I first came across this article more than a year ago when it was first written. I’m glad that I found it again today and can reblog it here.

I have gone to a lot of concerts over the years. I’m talking, “ saw Pink Floyd, The Clash, White Stripes before they broke up” years worth of concerts and “I wish I had started wearing ear plugs a long time ago” years worth of concerts.

One thing I have learned is that the festival experience really can be upgraded by you. Here are some easy ways to “upgrade” your concert experience while at the same easily making other people’s festival experiences more awesome.

OFFER TO TAKE PEOPLE’S PHOTOS - Everyone hates that thing where they are trying to take a picture and have to take a selfie with their arm way out in front of them and their heads smushed together. Seriously, you know that picture is going to suck. So next time, when you see someone struggling to hold the camera to take one of those horrible selfies, just walk up and say “hey can I take that for you?”. Guess what, you just made an instant concert friend and totally upgraded that person’s concert experience. Also, if you want a pic of you and your gf or you and your friends they kind of have to take your picture back. It’s like the law or something.

BE POSITIVE/ ENTHUSIASTIC - Speaking of taking pictures, Last year at Outside Lands I asked someone to take a picture for us. “Fuck yeah I will” was his response. While taking the picture he was saying “fuck yeah..fuck yeah..this pic is going to be killer”. When it was done I told him thanks and he said “No..thank YOU!..that was fucking awesome”. Festivals are just about the best place to find a gathering of eccentric, interesting, positive, individuals who are looking to have a good time. You can be one of those folks. Heck, you ARE one of those folks.

Here is the funny part. You might feel weird about it but you need to SHARE your enthusiasm with others to get the maximum out of your festival life. Yes, you are in crowd of people who are super different and diverse from you. But you all have something in common. You are so passionate about music you are coming to this shared experience even though it is a little nuts to stomp around for 3 days of mayhem.

So next fest, tell a stranger about a band you are excited about. Or give a tip to someone about where to eat or where the lockers are. Or wear a costume or a funny T-Shirt. Being enthusiastic and positive is seriously contagious. You will notice that your whole experience changes. If people think you are cool they will give you a larger slice of pizza or bend the rules slightly to let you go into a VIP section you shouldn’t. The shuttle bus you are on suddenly is a party bus now and you will meet cool people who have amazing stories of having come to this festival from Spain, or Australia, or Brasil, or wherever. And since you said “hi” to them and didn’t want anything in return, strangers will tell you some crazy ass story of the time they met Morrissey or will give you a tip for the next festival you go to…All of the above things have really happened to me just from being positive and enthusiastic..seriously..try it.

PUT YOUR FUCKING IPAD DOWN FOR FUCK’S SAKE - I know I just said to take a bunch of pictures and take other people’s pictures…but this is different. I am not talking about taking pictures of your friends or maybe recording a few shots just for your memories. I am talking about people who just stand there recording the whole show through their video camera.

STOP..in the words of Louis C.K. "you are watching TV of an event that you are there live to see..it’s right there in front of you". Let me add that YOU WILL NEVER FUCKING WATCH THAT VIDEO …I PROMISE YOU.. And if you do it will make you sad to watch because you will be thinking “man, I was just sitting there taking video and I wasn’t really present and enjoying it”. Please stop this..it makes the concert a group of observers rather than what it should be ..a shared human experience.

I really want to get a T shirt that says “Put your phone down, it’s a concert"

USE THE WORDS “NO WORRIES” AND “SORRY ” - I have learned from dealing with a lot of very volatile folks over the years that the worst way to get someone to calm down is to yell “calm down”. One of the best ways is to say “Im sorry” or “that was an accident, are we cool”. I’ve seen a lot of potentially ugly situations defused by a “no worries” or “sorry man” sprinkled in it at the right time. Everyone is then happier.

TELL YOUR FRIEND TO STOP TALKING DURING “BLACKBIRD” - Okay look I know I want to keep this as a list of positive suggestions and I will but people need to fucking stop talking at concerts during quiet beautiful songs. Okay?

Seriously, If you are standing there talking to someone during an acoustic number for a band you are supposedly a fan of and you paid to see, I just can’t get or understand you. It’s like you really need a complete life change. I saw Paul McCartney and heard people talking loudly around me during him doing a beautiful quiet rendition of “Black Bird”. I felt like people were pissing on the Mona Lisa. Please..I’m begging you… stop your stupid conversation. I know it’s stupid because you are seeing something beautiful and ignoring it and instead wrecking other people’s experience by talking over it. Unless you are saying to your friend “oh shit you are on fire!” you need to stow that conversation for after the show.

Honestly, if people are talking around me I just move to another spot. It seriously is just nails on a chalk board to me. I’m not saying people need to stand quietly the whole show..quite the opposite..I’m just saying if you are at a concert and they play a slow quiet beautiful song can you maybe listen to it?

I heard a guy loudly arguing with his girlfriend at a Jack White concert as he played a beautiful version of “Love Interrupted”. They were arguing about whether Coldplay or Radiohead was better. It was like A) shut up if you don’t know that Radiohead is better and B) Just fuck off in general, neither band is playing here tonight, you dummies.

This is one of those areas where if it’s your friend you really need to stop your buddy and be like ‘hey man..I want to watch this”. I know it makes it weird and awkward between you and your friend..but really?? It’s your friend so you had to know you were bring a problem.

Long story short, don’t be that talking guy that everyone is annoyed by….

SUPPORT OTHER PEOPLE WHEN THEY ARE “KILLING IT” I know some people don’t like it when people sing along too loudly and I’ve even seen some arguments over this at festivals But personally I love when people near me are singing along or are so crazy into the show that it’s physically affecting them. When you see people who are just totally into it, let them know that you don’t think they are weird, that you think they are AWESOME for being that into the band. Give them a high five or a thumbs up or just tell them they are killing it. Trust me when I say that if you encourage folks around you to have a good time, your whole section of the concert will get remarkably cooler and friendlier.

DANCE- As the great Tucker Gumber AKA “The Festival Guy” once told me, “there are no bad dancers, just boring people”. This is so true. In the words of the Violent Femmes, “When I say dance, you best dance Motherfuckers, …. just dance. or sing or bob your head..it’s great to be alive and listening to music you love isn’t it??

GIVE SOMETHING TO SOMEONE AND TELL THEM THEY ARE GETTING AN “UPGRADE” - I am trying to promote the idea of “Upgrade” the same way some people used to talk about “paying it forward”

At concerts you sometimes have a situation where you have a ticket you can’t use, or a shuttle pass you are done with, or a lighter or flashlight you don’t need any more. What do you do with it? I suggest you tell someone that you are giving them “an upgrade” when you give it away. Pick someone out who is killing it and being positive and fun and tell them..“hey here is an upgrade.” This let’s the person know that you don’t want anything in return. You just want them to have a better festival.. It also sends the positive vibes and gives them a gentle reminder to try to pass along an upgrade to someone cool the next time they can.

So there you have it…These are just my thoughts on how we could make festivals and concerts better and more fun. Feel free to tell me anything i missed or other ways to make you have found that will make people’s fests their best fests yet!

My 2014 Bonnaroo Experience: Part 2 - Camping, supplies and over preparation

As I am so apt to do, I read, and read, and read. Then I shopped, and shopped and shopped. And then probably shopped some more.

Camping:
I have only been to one roo, and I camped in Groop. A friend got a spot, and I wanted to make sure I could camp with the lovely @sassandcoffeecups so we splurged the extra $35 and went groop. I don’t know that I’ll ever do GA camping.

We had so much extra space. We wound up combining with another groop, and getting people from inforoo, so we were all able to arrive whenever, and still camp next to each other. This was actually how I met and made some amazing Bonnaroo friends.

We were able to have a big tent, and compile resources with the rest of our groop.

Supplies:
Ugh. So much supplies and gear. In a later post, I’ll share my packing list, which will have a complete list of everything I brought last year/everything I didn’t need, and an amended version for 2015.

I will say, I packed WAY too many outfits (wound up wearing the same shorts for most of the weekend.) but not nearly enough things with sleeves, not enough pants/leggings, and way too many shoes.

My med kid was overstocked, but if I needed that Imodium, I would have been really fucking glad I packed it.

The most clutch thing I brought was the shower/poop tent, shower bags and portable toilets. I usually wake up with THE WORRRRRRRRRRRST full bladder. We were literally in the very last spot in groop camping, so it was a 3-4 minute walk to the porta potties that we were closest to. Having the portable terlet and poop tent was like an oasis in the desert every single morning. And, let’s face it. Sometimes, when you’re hanging at the site, and you have had a serious case of the munchies and cotton mouth ( you know, thanks to the heat and such) you don’t want to walk that far to get to the tinkler. Also, being able to wash my pits and de-stickify after a long day of sweating before retiring for a few hours of slumber was amazing.

Over preparing:
I damn sure did. Anti bacterial wipes? I have three times what I used left from last year. I mentioned the outfits and shoes. I have about 20 travel tissue packs left from last year. I will only need to buy blister dressings, band aids and neosporin for the med kit. Everything else is still good.

I over bought gear. I thought everything needed to have wheels because I thought there would be a lot of schlepping. Some of the stuff could have been more useful without wheels. My 10x14 tent was way more than we needed, but initially, it was supposed to be for 3 of us.

In a later post, I’ll discuss the gear I found absolutely necessary and why.

Like I said before, I was disappointed with EDC this year. Not because of Insomniac, everything that Insomniac Events created for us this year was perfect. From the rides, to the stage set ups to the DJs. All of it was great. My problem was with a lot of the people that went. Also there were way too many people, but that’s a given since this event has grown so much over the years.

To start off, the general atmosphere was bland. People weren’t as friendly and some were just downright rude for no reason. I didn’t see a lot of people with kandi but I did see a some. One of my friends told me that he couldn’t find people willing to trade with him because he didn’t have a lot of cuffs. He also said that a guy cursed him out because he wasn’t willing to trade him his first and only 3D. He says that the guy went as far as to threaten to hit him, until his friends finally pulled him away.

I’ve heard stories of people stealing this year. From standing in line to standing in the crowd watching a DJ. There was a couple going around trying to steal things from people’s backpacks when they weren’t paying attention (while looking out for each other). And I hear that people would cut open a person’s backpack and when everything fell out they picked the stuff up and ran.

There are also numerous stories of people ending up in a jail cell due to entrapment. Apparently these people found small bags with pills on the ground and decided to pocket them and soon afterwards they were busted by an undercover cop for possession.

There was a lot of other shady shit that went down at EDC, but I think I’ve made my point.

Really, I would love to continue going to EDC, but I don’t think I will. I’ll stick to small raves, undergrounds, music festivals, and some insomniac massives (like the Wonderland events). I’m just not interested in EDC anymore. It’s just hard to enjoy myself and the music when I’m surrounded by a bunch of assholes and people who just go to get “fucked up” and “wasted”. Seriously, so many people go that don’t give a flying fuck about the music. Actually, last year in line for Escape All Hallow’s Eve, me and my friends were talking about which DJs we planned to see and some guys says, “Aww, they actually came here for the music”. Shit like that pisses me off. And people like that really kill the fucking mood. Anyway, I have a billion opinions on “festival goers” these days but I’ll leave it at that.

Anybody who has ever been to a music festival will be able to tell you that there’s a lot of things that can kill your festival buzz.

It starts with actually getting to the festival site. Most of you don’t live close to the festival premises, so either you get there by public transport or you drive there yourself. Either way, you’re fucked! Should you consider option one: be prepared for overly crowded, noisy trains and busses with little to no room to store your way to heavily packed backpack, your stuffed cooler and that four cases of beer you insisted on taking with you because you might get thirsty along the way. Option two, driving yourself, mostly means traffic jams and having to park two kilometers from the actual camping site which includes having to walk that distance with all of the above mentioned items.

When you finally arrive at the camping site, all damp, the search for a good spot begins. You want to make sure you’re not too far away from the sanitary block but also not too close. You don’t want to be too near to the lampposts because that will keep you from getting some shut eye (nobody actually sleeps on a festival, they rest their eyes), nor do you want to be too far away because, obviously, you still want to find your way back. Also, you do want to stay away from the outer border, because that’s where tents get either trashed, peed on or invaded by drunk people who are to wasted to get to their own.

You a reasonably good spot, or what you think is a reasonably good spot and start pitching up your tent. If you are lucky, you (or your mom) bought one of those easy set up tents that conveniently unfold themselves when you get them out of the bag. Otherwise, you match all the right pieces together until you have something that more or less looks like it could keep a person sheltered for a couple of days. IKEA for dummies. And then, as soon as you have your little mattress unrolled, your sleeping bag unfolded and your stuff in your tent… The Neighbors. You kiss your already short nights goodbye because they will be loud and rude and drunk before the festival has even started.

At the festival site there’s just too many people. They’re queuing up at portable toilets, food stalls, the ATM machine. They are trying to push their way through the crowd while meanwhile spilling their drinks on you and stepping on your toes and you can feel their sweaty bodies touching you. You could swear they are doing it on purpose. You promise yourself this is the last year you’ve bought tickets to this madness, they were way overpriced anyway.

However… by the time you get back home and people ask you how it has been, you only remember how the singer of your favorite band looked at you while singing one of your favorite songs, and that conversation you had with that cute boy or girl standing next to you waiting for the Foo Fighters to come on stage. And you know: next year will be even better.

If you describe Bonnaroo to anyone who hasn’t been there themselves, it invariably sounds like hell. For four days, 90,000 people from all over gather in a 10,000-person town where, by mid-June, the temperature is regularly hitting 90 degrees. There, they pitch campsites that, by morning light, become sweat lodges. There are no toilets. It costs about $7 to shower. If you want to go to bed before 4 so you’re ready to rise with the sun at 6, you should prepare yourself to feel Skrillex pulsing through the campgrounds and down your spinal column like a stampede of buffalo who’ve just dosed on MDMA.

If you speak to most anyone who’s been to Bonnaroo, though, you’ll hear those same exact things in a positive light. These are not delusional people (for the most part). They just genuinely love Bonnaroo. That’s because in the abstract, Bonnaroo is a nightmare. In reality, it’s saved by its audience and the stories they bring to the farm (and it’s still kind of a nightmare). These are the people you meet at Bonnaroo.
